SoftwareRevisionControl.txt do not use, in development pic6/HerdDumbLeader.jpg Goal: - provide software revision control between two cooperative people of the 1401 Restoration website. Note: I find it useful to have a complete version of the website on my computer. This can be done in several ways a) from a USB thumb drive, from a current "master" b) down load the complete web site - Years ago, Len Shustek suggested www.httrack.com for Windows - httrack suggests www.MacPorts.com for the Mac OSs MacPorts requires several MAC developer kits, Xcode 13 provides Revision Control Instructions: - see bottom of this document Lock on update of this page is owned by - choice of ( "Ed" or "Tom" or "none" ) (THIS_PAGE_LOCK_OWNER)-------------------------- --- Ed After gaining lock in above line, owner may change below items. (FILES_CHECKED_OUT_BY)--------------------------------- Full path name of items checked out (down loaded), with name of owner and date - second line, reason (This includes names of new files to be added or removed) (CHECKED_IN_BY)--------------------------------- Full path name of items checked in (up loaded), with name of previous owner and date checked in - second line, reason (to help keep local copies, for reference, up to date) (checked out items, but not changed, and no longer being changed, do not need to be listed) (most recent checked in at top, near here) (Comments)-------------------------------- I presume since there will be (only) two people interacting with the web site on the host, our "software revision control" can be rather "simple" and "easy". The web site currently (2022) has - 15,387 "items" - about 35 folders/directories - 8.49 gigabytes Current conventions - - simplest HTML, no CSS, no JavaScript, (no inputs other than for Google search) - I keep the current master on my machine, work on it there, upload when "purfekt". - I currently up and down load using FileZilla - early on I tried to speed page and picture download by -- having one "display size" and one "thumb nail" size of each photo --- "display" size usually say 800 pixels high --- "thumb nail" size usually say 100 pixels high -- after a few years I gave that up and used the form - trying to keep the directories of a "folder" small, < say 500 entries I have topic_grouped sub-folders and maybe 6 folders of mostly pictures. - I don't know/bother with making the site cell phone friendly. - I like a light blue background, easier on my one good eye. -- speaking of eyes, I tend to use the tag a lot to increase the size of text. - I mostly use FireFox as a browser, I used to check occasionally with Chrome and Safari but everything seems to work with the modern major browsers - (INSRUCTIONS)------------------------------------- If you want to make a/several changes to the web site ------ 1) to attempt an "atomic" lock of this web page for a) down load a copy of this page, b) look at the "(THIS_PAGE_LOCK_OWNER)--------------------------" section c) if the owner is "none" - enter your name and upload this page - down load the page again to see if you are the owner - if so, edit this page as desired -- set the owner to "none" -- upload this web page promptly, releasing the lock for others d) if not, wait a little while (hopefully less that 10 minutes, and try again.
