I was on duty yesterday for the IBM Centennial lecture. Jim Somers asked if I could open the 1401 area for a visitor who was about to arrive later in the afternoon and I said "Sure." Just a bit after 5:00 in came Sam Palmisano with John Hollar and Jon Iwata. I have to say that Sam was impressed with the work that the team had done and remembered dealing with 1401s as part of his state and local government territory in Baltimore. He said that, around 1975, he had one 1401 that was caught in a flooded basement and that the customer finally conceded that he should upgrade ... to a System/360. Sam recognized the 026s and collator without prompting.
